Vocabulary #11

galaxy: a large group of stars held togther by gravity.
S: Andromeda is the closest galaxy to us.

Milky Way: our home galaxy.
S: The milky way is a spiral galaxy.

Spectrum: a band of color made when white light is broken up.
S:In the spectrum you can see dark patterns.

expansion redshift: the shift of a spectrum of a galaxy toward longer (redder) wavelenghts due to the expansion of space.
S: The increase in wavelenght is due to expation redshift.

big bang: the beginning of the universe, when the density of the universe was very high.
S:The universe has expaned ever since the big bag.

background radiation:electromagnetic radiation left over from the big bag.
S:Most of the background radiation are microwaves.

quasar: an extremely bright, extremely distant, high-energy source.
S:Quasars are bigger than the universe.
